Web Accessibility Overview

MERAK has worked on a variety of web application projects which were required to meet stringent accessibility requirements and we have a pool of resources qualified in this area of expertise. 

Web Accessibility Experience

Some of the web accessibility requirements which MERAK has implemented in past projects includes: 
  • Screen Readers - all pages in the site were required to be fully functional if used by a screen reader
  • Provide alternatives to auditory and visual content
  • Restricted use of Colour
  • Ontario Disabilities Act (ODA) compliance

Website Accessibility Assessment

The MERAK team will run a series of tests and diagnostics on your web application to determine the overall accessibility of the site. The end deliverable of this service is a detailed accessibility report which will provide you with details such as: 
  • An outline of all areas of your web application which do not conform to the specified accessibility guidelines (the guidelines may be defined by your organization [ie. Ontario Disabilities Act (ODA) compliance] or taken from a 3rd party such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)).
  • A prioritization of the above list based on the severity of the accessibility breakdown
  • A list of suggested resolutions for all accessibility breakdowns
  • A work estimation for all accessibility breakdowns

Website Accessibility Enhancements

The MERAK team will administer a project to address all accessibility breakdowns identified during the accessibility assessment. This project typically flows through all of the workflows (requirements, analysis & design, implementation, test, etc) of the software development life cycle. A high level overview of a few of the major phases in the project include: 
  • Gather requirements for site modifications based on the accessibility assessment
  • Prototype site changes (depending on the extent of the accessibility breakdowns there could be some large changes to your web application)
  • Design and implement proposed accessibility changes
  • A Quality Assurance phase is administered to ensure the original integrity of the site has not been compromised
  • A pre-production accessibility analysis is administered to ensure all accessibility breakdowns have been addressed
